Background of the Study
Electoral violence is a persistent issue in many parts of Nigeria, and its impact on political participation cannot be underestimated. In Mubi North Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State, electoral violence has been observed to disproportionately affect women’s participation in the political process. Violence during elections often intimidates voters, disrupts polling stations, and, in some cases, results in physical harm, particularly to women who are already marginalized in the political sphere. Women, especially in Northern Nigeria, face significant socio-cultural and economic barriers to engaging in politics, and electoral violence further exacerbates these challenges (Mohammed & Abdulahi, 2024). This study aims to evaluate how electoral violence in Mubi North affects women’s ability to participate in political processes, vote, and run for political office, as well as to assess the long-term effects on their political engagement (Isaac & Lawal, 2023).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Mubi North, women face considerable challenges in participating in politics, and electoral violence is a major obstacle. The violent nature of local elections discourages women from participating in the electoral process, either as voters or candidates, due to fears of physical harm or intimidation (Aminu & Adamu, 2023). This problem is compounded by entrenched gender biases and a lack of adequate protection for women during the election process, creating an environment where their voices are often silenced. This study will investigate the effects of electoral violence on women’s political participation in Mubi North, with a focus on understanding the social, economic, and political consequences for women in the region.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the impact of electoral violence on women’s voter participation in Mubi North Local Government Area.
To evaluate how electoral violence affects women’s candidacy and political ambition in Mubi North.
To identify strategies to mitigate the impact of electoral violence on women’s political participation in Mubi North.

1.5 Research Hypothesis

The fear of electoral violence diminishes women’s political ambition and candidacy in Mubi North.
Strengthening security measures and political education for women will reduce the negative impact of electoral violence on their political participation.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how electoral violence impacts women’s participation in politics, particularly in Northern Nigeria. By focusing on Mubi North, the study will provide evidence to guide policy reforms and intervention strategies aimed at reducing electoral violence and promoting gender equality in political participation.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the effects of electoral violence on women’s political participation in Mubi North Local Government Area, Adamawa State, during the 2023 elections. The study will not cover other LGAs or examine electoral violence at the national level. A limitation of the study is the potential difficulty in gathering data from female victims of electoral violence, who may be unwilling to speak out due to fear of retaliation.
